How to obtain a birth certificate

In hospital, you will need:
A marriage certificate –, and official translation of this.
To get this, contact the Országos Fordító és Fordításhitelesítő Iroda:
1062 Budapest, Bajza utca 52. Tel: +36-1-428-9600 Internet: www.offi.hu

1. step: to obtain this translation.

  • passport
  • address card (if you have one)

2. step: Visit the Mayor’s Office in XII. district. They will issue a temporary birth certificate.
Mayor’s Office:
XII. kerületi Polgármesteri Hivatal - Anyakönyvi Csoport
1126 Budapest, Böszörményi út 23-25.
Paládi Elek 224-5900/226 paladi.elek@bp12ker.hu
Tremmel Éva 224-5900/236 tremmel.eva@bp12ker.hu

3. step: Once you have this temporary birth certificate, visit your Embassy. You have to obtain an official form which recognizes your baby’s status as a citizen of your country.

4. step: Ask for a baby passport to be issued, or to add the baby to one of the parents’ passports.

5. step: You should make an official translation of this passport. (see above)

6. step: You should go back to the Mayor’s office in the XII. district (because the baby was born in this district). Here, the final birth certificate will be written.

7. step: In the Mayor’s Office, it’s also possible to ask for an address card for the baby; refer to the name and address above.

If you are not married and if you want the father’s data written into the baby’s birth certificate you should make a statement about paternity.
For this both you and the father should go to the Mayor’s Office in the district in which you live, or to the Mayor’s Office in the XII. district (for the address, see above).
You need

  • a paper from the mother’s country (embassy) stating that the mother is not married
  • an official translation of this paper concerning official translation
  • a medical verification of the pregnancy (from your obstetrician)
  • your passport
  • address card (if owned)
  • a person willing to act as translator ; this person does not need to be official, but they can not be a relative.

You and the father must appear personally together at the Mayor’s Office, for this application to be successful.
It is highly advisable to perform this declaration of paternity before the birth, because the baby’s registration will be easier later, once this is achieved.
